If you are lucky enough to have a pet in your life, you will know how valuable they are, how much joy they bring to our lives and that they are as much of a part of the family as any other member. They need good care, love and attention. And when you have the attachment to that being, there is one thing you fear the most: them getting sick. Unfortunately, cancer is one of the things that can simply happen, but if it is caught in time and taken care of, your dog can continue to live a long and happy life.
How it can be treated
Cancer in dogs can be treated just like in humans. Chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy and surgeries are all options and procedures that can save your dog’s life if it comes to it. However, you should always consult your doctor to see what the best treatment for your pet is. Some forms of cancer are benign, and it might be safer for your dog to simply not do anything about it especially if your dog is older.
Noticing the signs
The best way you can help your pet is to educate yourself and notice the problems in time so you can help them before the cancer progresses.
If you notice a swelling on your dog’s body that is not going down, or simply continues to grow, it might be a sign of a tumor, and you should take them to the veterinarian as soon as you notice. If your dog has a lot of fur, it might be hard to notice the bumps, so make sure you pay attention to their body while you’re petting them.
Changes in behavior
The signs of cancer in dogs aren’t just physical, so you should pay attention to any personality changes in your dog too. Loss of appetite and low energy are the two main things to look after. But these can be signs of many other things as well, and you shouldn’t get too concerned if this is the only thing you notice.
Wounds are normal on dogs, especially those that are very active and spend a lot of time outside. However, pay attention to the wounds that are not healing normally, or not healing at all, as well as wounds that are appearing by themselves.
How you can prevent it
Even though there is no way to completely prevent cancer, there are things you can do to lower the risk. Provide them a good diet and all-natural food choices to give them proper nutrition. There is also the option so spraying or neutering your dog at a young age, as a way to prevent reproductive cancers. If your home doesn’t have an outdoor space, you have to make it a priority to take your dog outside as much as you can, to make sure that they are getting a lot of exercise. If you notice that your dog isn’t social and isn’t naturally prone to activity, try to motivate them by playing with them, being active with them, or bring other dogs for them to socialize with.
Hearing that your pet has cancer is a difficult situation for anybody, and it can truly be devastating, but that is exactly why it’s important to remember that there are so many ways to treat it, as well as steps of prevention. Paying attention to your dogs and looking for the early warning signs might just save your dog’s life down the line, so make sure you inform your household what signs to look for, and take them to the vet as soon as you spot something you think might be dangerous.
